TR Awareness Month - Celebrate with us

This year’s theme is: Recreation Therapy: Recognize ability. Reaffirm possibility.

February is TR Awareness Month. Join Therapeutic Recreation Specialists across Ontario and the country as we celebrate, promote and advocate for our growing profession.

Therapeutic Recreation: Is a process that utilizes functional intervention, education and recreation participation to enable persons with physical, cognitive, emotional and/or social limitations to acquire and/or maintain the skills, knowledge and behaviours that will allow them to enjoy their leisure optimally, function independently with the least amount of assistance and participate as fully as possible in society. Therapeutic Recreation intervention is provided by trained professionals in clinical and/or community settings.

What do TR Professionals do?
1.Work with persons who may benefit from assistance to improve their quality of life
2. Use recreation and leisure to help maximize an individual’s independence
3. Make necessary adaptations to recreation and leisure opportunities to allow for full participation
4. Educate individuals about the skills and resources required to participate in recreation and leisure

TR Professionals use Recreation and Leisure to help people to...
1. Improve physical and cognitive abilities
2. Increase confidence and self-esteem
3. Foster greater involvement in the community
4. Strengthen interpersonal skills and relationships
5. Improve coping and adaptation skills
6. Enhance wellbeing
7. encourage a greater sense of accomplishment
8. realize the benefits of a healthy leisure lifestyle

The word recreation is really a very beautiful word. It is defined in the dictionary as "the process of giving new life to something, of refreshing something, of restoring something." This something, of course, is the whole person.
